period: 2005<\/p>\n<p>Roombeek is a commercial street and also the urban core of the district. It made international headlines due to the Enschede fireworks warehouse disaster (Dutch, &#8220;Vuurwerkramp&#8221;) on May 13, 2000. The warehouse explosion in Roombeek caused 23 deaths, and wounded 947 people. Around 400 homes were destroyed, and 1500 were seriously damaged by the fireworks explosion.<\/p>\n<p>Prior, there were already plans for a major renovation of the district. Many old factory complexes are now renovated and suitable for living, work, and cultural activities. A location along the Roombeek waterway was dedicated as a memorial to the four firefighters who died in the Enschede fireworks disaster.<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/i111.photobucket.com\/albums\/n121\/bashlitch\/djournal\/dj9\/roombeek-de-beek-9.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The small stream, which gives its name to the street and has in the past flowed underground, has been restored and brought up to the surface again. Now the water is part of the urban environment and has become the district\u2019s new central point. Its asymmetrical design, which widens and narrows along the street, accentuates its different spatial features. The base of the stream is treated with a rough structure that reduces the flowing speed of the water and creates a constant reflective pattern on the water surface.
